This is one of those simple romances with no need to so much drama. The heroine grew up in an unloved childhood between two self-absorbed parents who didn't care about their kids but didn't want to lose to each other in the custody battle. The hero is dealing with a custody battle himself against his mother-in-law over his son. Apparently, the poor man's wife took a lot of drugs, alcohol, and went for a swim. This is all a year prior and the hero was so disturbed and heartbroken over his loss, he wasn't able to take care of his son. So, the mother-in-law was granted temporary custody but now she wants permanent custody and won't allow the hero to see his own son. He only gets a few minutes on the phone with the little boy, the case is quite heartbreaking because the hero knows from his dead wife that the mother was a cold as a fish to her daughter and he doesn't want his son to grow up in that environment. The heroine has the family home where she grew up in being under threat by greedy relatives. The only solution for both of these people is to marry and they do. They do so well with each other and other people like the hero's little boy and housekeeper. Then we do get the big twist: the hero thinks it's his fault for his wife's death as the mother-in-law so bragged out so much but the housekeeper reveals it was really the mother-in-law because she kept corning her poor daughter into thinking that the hero had abandoned her. The stress from the cold-hearted woman made the wife turn to drugs and alcohol. Humiliated by the revelation, the mother-in-law pulls back and the hero is granted full and permanent custody of the little boy. The hero and heroine confront their feelings about each other and only able to reveal when the heroine tries to leave. It was a simple ending and an okay one.
